ABOUT

Bex Phillips is a director/producer from the dark depths of Devon. She is an unashamed horror nerd with a love for all things weird & wonderful on a mission to prove that anything is possible!
With a background in production design and choreography, Bex has a hands-on approach to creating movie magic, using in camera effects, miniatures, eye catching locations and a touch of the experimental to bring stories to life.
She is inspired by the 70’s/80’s DIY model of genre filmmaking donning the director/producer hat like some of her genre heroes including Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven and George A Romero. As well as being influenced by the horror heavyweights of this era, she also draws influence and inspiration from producers Debra Hill and Joan Ganz Cooney, visionaries David Lynch and Jim Henson, the cross platform approach of Monkeypaw productions and, artists such as Frida Kahlo and choreographer Pina Bausch
The Medusa Box is Bex debut feature film, and has been a whole decade in the making. The filmmakers journey has been inadvertently captured amongst the narrative of the film with footage included that spans this 10 year timeline.
The feature length version of the film was able to go into production after the success of the short film The Medusa Box Prologue (2022). This short gave a taster of what was to come and screened at a selection of film festivals which in turn helped raise a budget and the profile for the feature, and also an audience keen to hear the full story.
Prior to this Bex has made a number of shorts ranging in style from experimental dance film, narrative horror and music videos. Her films take an imaginative look at how female characters navigate the horror landscape and society, and combine magical realism with a sprinkle of the dark and macabre to bring these twisted tales to life.
Strange is beautiful.
