Bex Phillips is an unashamed horror nerd from the dark depths of Devon who has a love for all things weird & wonderful! Her films take an imaginative look at how female characters navigate society through a horror lens, combining magical realism with a sprinkle of the macabre to bring these twisted tales to life.

With a background in production design and choreography, Bex has a hands-on approach to creating movie magic​, using in-camera effects, miniatures and a touch of the experimental. She is inspired by the 70’s/80’s DIY model of genre filmmaking donning the director/producer hat like some of her genre heroes including Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven and George A Romero. As well as being influenced by the horror heavyweights of this era, she also draws influence and inspiration from visionaries David Lynch and Jim Henson, producers Debra Hill and Joan Ganz Cooney, and, artists such as Frida Kahlo, Wendy Froud and choreographer Pina Bausch

Bex's debut feature film The Medusa Box will be heading to the big screen in 2027/28 as it embarks on its film festival campaign. The movie has been a whole decade in the making and the filmmaker's journey has been inadvertently captured amongst the narrative of the film with footage included that spans this 10 year timeline. Bex believes filmmaking should not be exclusively for the privileged, and The Medusa Box is proof that anything is possible if you put your heart, mind and soul into it, even if the odds are stacked against you.

Prior to The Medusa Box, Bex has made a number of shorts ranging in style from experimental dance film, to narrative horror and music video. She established [EK!]Productions back in 2016, and prior to this was Director of a multi-media dance company called Eklectika! which is where the name [EK!] derives. She also writes for publications including D&C FILM, The PRSD and ArtsCulture Magazine, and works on a variety of ongoing art and illustration projects.
